What can we help you find?
Our Company
About Māla Honey.
Learn about our small batch process, Hawaiian ingredients, beekeeping practices and the values behind every Māla Honey product.
What is Māla Honey Botanicals?
Māla Honey Botanicals is a Hawaiʻi Island honey and skincare company founded by beekeeper and maker Alex Bean. We create raw Hawaiian honey infusions, honeycomb, honey based skincare and educational honeybee experiences.
Our products connect beekeeping, tropical agriculture and thoughtfully selected botanicals. Everything is made in small batches with a focus on quality, transparency, responsible sourcing and a close relationship with the land and honeybees.
Where is Māla Honey Botanicals located?
Māla Honey Botanicals is based in Honokaʻa on the northern side of Hawaiʻi Island. Our honeybee tours take place nearby at Puʻu Wai Gardens, just minutes from the Waipiʻo Valley Lookout.
We ship our products throughout Hawaiʻi and the continental United States. Local pickup availability may vary and is shown during checkout when offered.
What makes Māla Honey different?
Māla Honey brings together raw Hawaiian honey, organic botanicals, regenerative beekeeping and distinctive small batch recipes. We are not trying to make ordinary flavored honey. Each infusion is designed to have its own texture, aroma, color and culinary personality.
Our skincare also begins with ingredients from the hive, including raw honey, beeswax and propolis, combined with botanical oils, herbs, clays and charcoal. Whenever possible, we choose ingredients grown or produced in Hawaiʻi.
Are Māla Honey products made in small batches?
Yes. Our honey infusions and skincare are handcrafted in small batches on Hawaiʻi Island. Working in smaller batches allows us to pay close attention to texture, aroma, ingredient quality and consistency.
Natural products may still show slight differences from batch to batch. Honey color, thickness and flavor can shift with the season because bees gather nectar from changing island blossoms.
Does Māla Honey use organic ingredients?
Our botanical recipes are built around organic ingredients, including herbs, flowers, spices, cacao and mushroom fruiting body powders. Product ingredient lists provide the most current details for each recipe.
Because honey is produced by free flying bees that forage across a broad landscape, honey certification and botanical certification are different matters. We describe our ingredients carefully and encourage customers to read each product label when a specific certification is important to them.
What does regenerative beekeeping mean to Māla Honey?
For us, regenerative beekeeping means managing colonies with long term bee health, land health and resilience in mind. We aim to support strong colonies, preserve enough honey for the bees and work in relationship with the surrounding farm and flowering landscape.
It also means recognizing that healthy honeybees depend on diverse forage, responsible land care and thoughtful hive management. Our tours give guests a closer look at how bees connect to tropical fruit trees, flowers and food production.
Is Māla Honey packaging plastic free?
We prioritize glass jars, recyclable materials and compostable or paper based shipping supplies wherever practical. Reducing unnecessary plastic has been part of the Māla Honey mission from the beginning.
Packaging may occasionally evolve as we improve durability, shipping protection and product safety, but our goal remains to use thoughtful materials with as little waste as possible.
Honey Education
Raw Hawaiian Honey.
Understand crystallization, storage, texture, honeycomb, seasonal variation and what makes raw Hawaiian honey unique.
What is raw honey?
Raw honey is honey that has not been heavily heated or processed into a perfectly uniform commercial product. It retains its natural aroma, color, texture and seasonal character.
Raw honey may contain naturally occurring pollen particles, fine beeswax and tiny air bubbles. These are normal parts of minimally processed honey and help distinguish it from highly filtered syrup like honey products.
What makes Hawaiian honey special?
Hawaiʻi has distinctive flowering plants, tropical growing conditions and long nectar seasons. Depending on location and season, bees may gather nectar from kiawe, ʻōhiʻa lehua, macadamia, tropical fruit blossoms and many other plants.
The result can be an unusually broad range of honey colors, aromas and flavor profiles. Some Hawaiian honeys are pale, creamy and delicate, while others are amber, floral, malty or deeply aromatic.
Why does raw honey crystallize?
Crystallization is a natural physical change in honey. Honey contains several natural sugars, especially glucose and fructose. Over time, some glucose separates from the liquid portion and forms crystals.
The speed and texture of crystallization depend on the nectar source, temperature, moisture level and natural particles in the honey. Some varieties remain liquid for a long time, while others become creamy or firm relatively quickly.
Crystallization does not mean the honey is spoiled. In many cases it is a sign that the honey has remained close to its natural state.
Is crystallized honey still safe to eat?
Yes. Crystallized honey is generally safe to eat and can be enjoyed exactly as it is. Many people prefer the thicker, spreadable texture on toast, fruit, cheese, oatmeal and baked goods.
As with any food, discontinue use if a product shows signs of contamination, an unusual fermented odor, a damaged seal or visible foreign growth. Normal crystals alone are not a sign of spoilage.
How can I gently soften crystallized honey?
Place the tightly closed jar in a bowl of warm water and allow it to soften gradually. Stir the honey occasionally with a clean, dry utensil if the jar opening allows.
Avoid boiling water and intense direct heat. High heat can change the honey’s aroma, flavor and raw character. A slow, gentle warming method provides better control.
Should raw honey be refrigerated?
No. Raw honey is usually best stored tightly closed at normal room temperature in a dry cabinet away from direct sunlight and strong heat.
Refrigeration can accelerate crystallization and make honey very firm. Always use a clean, dry spoon because introducing water or food particles can reduce quality.
Does honey expire?
Properly stored honey is naturally long lasting because of its low moisture and acidic environment. Over time, however, its color, aroma and texture may slowly change.
Keep the lid secure, avoid introducing moisture and follow any best by guidance printed on the package. A best by date generally relates to peak quality rather than an abrupt change in safety.
Why does honey sometimes separate or develop lighter areas?
Natural honey can show layers, streaks, foam or lighter areas as crystals form and air rises. Botanical powders may also settle or move within an infused honey.
This usually reflects differences in crystal size, density and temperature rather than a problem. Stir the honey with a clean, dry spoon if you prefer a more even texture.
Why does the color of raw honey change from season to season?
Honey reflects the flowers available to the bees. Changes in rainfall, bloom timing, location and nectar flow can alter the finished honey’s color and flavor.
Seasonal variation is part of the beauty of real honey. A jar may be lighter, darker, more floral or more robust than a previous harvest while still meeting the same quality standards.
What is raw honeycomb and can I eat the wax?
Raw honeycomb is honey stored inside the bees’ natural beeswax cells. The entire piece can be chewed, including the wax.
Some people swallow the softened wax, while others chew it until the honey is gone and discard the remaining wax. Honeycomb pairs beautifully with cheese, fruit, bread, yogurt and grazing boards.
Explore our raw Hawaiian honeycomb.
Can babies eat honey?
No. Honey should not be given to infants younger than 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism. This applies to raw honey, pasteurized honey, honeycomb and foods sweetened with honey.
Our jars include the reminder not to feed honey to infants under one year of age.
Botanical Honey
Honey Infusions.
Learn what botanical honey infusions and electuaries are, how they are made and how to use them in everyday food and drink.
What is a botanical honey infusion?
A botanical honey infusion combines honey with ingredients such as flowers, herbs, spices, cacao or mushroom powders. The honey acts as both the base and the carrier of flavor.
Unlike a simple flavored syrup, a true honey infusion can have a thick, layered texture and a flavor that develops gradually. At Māla Honey, each recipe is built to taste distinctive while remaining versatile enough for everyday use.
What is a honey electuary?
An electuary is a traditional preparation made by combining honey with finely ground herbs, spices or other botanical ingredients. The result is usually a thick paste or spoonable mixture.
We generally use the clearer customer friendly term botanical honey infusion, but electuary is an accurate historical term for some of our recipes, especially those containing powdered ingredients.
Are infused honey and flavored honey the same thing?
They can overlap, but the terms are not always identical. Flavored honey may be made with extracts or added flavoring. A botanical infusion uses real ingredients such as flowers, cacao, turmeric, ginger or mushroom fruiting body powders.
Māla Honey infusions are designed around the character of the whole ingredients rather than an artificial flavor profile.
What are the benefits of botanical honey infusions?
Botanical honey infusions make herbs, flowers, spices and cacao easy and enjoyable to use in everyday food and drink. Each recipe offers its own flavor, aroma, color and culinary possibilities.
Some ingredients have long histories in culinary and wellness traditions, but Māla Honey infusions are foods, not medicines. They are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease, and individual experiences vary.
How should I use a honey infusion?
Start with a small spoonful and adjust to taste. Honey infusions can be stirred into tea, coffee, warm milk, sparkling water, yogurt, oatmeal, smoothies, dressings and marinades.
They can also be spread on toast, paired with cheese, spooned over fruit or used in desserts. Each recipe has a different flavor profile, so part of the experience is discovering your favorite combinations.
Can I put infused honey in hot tea or coffee?
Yes. Add it to tea, coffee, hot chocolate or warm milk and stir thoroughly. For a more noticeable raw honey character, let boiling liquid cool slightly before adding the honey.
Chocolate Mushroom is especially suited to coffee and hot chocolate, Golden Glow works beautifully in tea and warm milk, and Flower Power adds floral sweetness to tea and sparkling drinks.
Do botanical honey infusions need to be refrigerated?
Our honey infusions are generally stored tightly closed at normal room temperature in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Always use a clean, dry spoon. Refrigeration can make the honey much firmer and may accelerate visible crystallization.
Why should I stir my infused honey?
Real botanical powders and natural honey crystals can move, settle or form layers over time. This is especially noticeable in recipes containing cacao, turmeric or mushroom powders.
Stirring with a clean, dry spoon redistributes the ingredients and restores a more even texture. Separation does not automatically mean the product has spoiled.
Which Māla Honey infusion should I try first?
- Flower Power is best for someone who enjoys floral, bright and subtly tart flavors.
- Golden Glow is ideal for someone who enjoys warming turmeric, ginger and gently spiced flavors.
- Chocolate Mushroom is the easiest choice for chocolate lovers and coffee drinkers.
The honey infusion collection is a good way to experience all three.
Floral Honey
Flower Power.
A vibrant floral infusion made with creamy Hawaiian kiawe honey and a thoughtfully balanced blend of flowers.
What is in Flower Power Honey?
Flower Power begins with organic raw Hawaiian honey and includes hibiscus flower, rose petals, chamomile flower, passionflower leaf and lavender.
The floral blend creates a colorful, aromatic honey with layers of sweetness, gentle tartness and soft botanical flavor.
What does Flower Power Honey taste like?
Flower Power is floral, bright and gently tart without losing the rich sweetness of honey. Hibiscus contributes vibrancy, rose and lavender add aroma, and chamomile and passionflower help round out the blend.
The result is more complex than a simple sweet floral flavor. It works well for people who enjoy distinctive honey, botanical teas and elegant food pairings.
How can I use Flower Power Honey?
Stir Flower Power into tea, lemonade, sparkling water or a floral cocktail. Spoon it over yogurt, oatmeal, fruit, ice cream, cheesecake or toast.
It also pairs beautifully with soft cheese, goat cheese, brie and grazing boards. Its vivid color makes it especially attractive in drinks, desserts and gifts.
Turmeric Honey
Golden Glow.
A warming Hawaiian honey infusion with turmeric, ginger, lemongrass, moringa and black pepper.
What is in Golden Glow Honey?
Golden Glow combines organic raw Hawaiian honey with turmeric root powder, ginger root powder, lemongrass, moringa leaf powder and black pepper.
The ingredients create a vivid golden color and a warming flavor that balances honey sweetness with earthy spice and citrus like lemongrass notes.
What does Golden Glow Honey taste like?
Golden Glow tastes gently spiced, earthy and warming. Turmeric gives the infusion depth, ginger adds brightness and warmth, lemongrass brings a fresh aromatic quality, and honey keeps the blend rounded and approachable.
The small amount of black pepper is part of the recipe but does not make the honey aggressively peppery.
How can I use Golden Glow Honey?
Stir Golden Glow into tea, warm milk or a golden latte. Add it to smoothies, yogurt and oatmeal, or use it to sweeten a lemon and ginger drink.
In savory cooking, it works well in salad dressings, glazes, marinades and sauces. Try combining it with citrus, vinegar, olive oil and salt for a simple turmeric honey dressing.
Cacao Honey
Chocolate Mushroom.
A rich chocolate honey infusion made with organic cacao and fruiting body powders of reishi, chaga and cordyceps.
What is in Chocolate Mushroom Honey?
Chocolate Mushroom combines raw Hawaiian honey with organic cacao and organic fruiting body powders of reishi, chaga and cordyceps.
We use mushroom fruiting body powders rather than filler based blends. The honey and cacao create a rich chocolate base that makes the mushroom ingredients easy to incorporate into food and drinks.
Does Chocolate Mushroom Honey taste like mushrooms?
The dominant flavor is rich cacao and honey rather than an obvious culinary mushroom flavor. The mushroom powders add depth and earthiness, but most people experience it primarily as a complex chocolate honey.
It is especially approachable for someone who is curious about mushroom powders but does not enjoy the taste of mushroom tea or unsweetened mushroom blends.
How can I use Chocolate Mushroom Honey?
Stir it into coffee, espresso, hot chocolate, warm milk or a smoothie. Spoon it over oatmeal, yogurt, bananas, strawberries, ice cream, pancakes or toast.
It can also be used in chocolate sauces, energy bites, desserts and baking. Stir the jar before use if the cacao or mushroom powders have settled.
Is Chocolate Mushroom Honey a supplement or medicine?
No. Chocolate Mushroom Honey is sold as a food and culinary honey infusion. It is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
People who are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, managing a medical condition or sensitive to mushrooms should speak with an appropriate healthcare professional before introducing unfamiliar botanical ingredients.
Natural Skin Rituals
Honey Skincare.
Discover how honey, botanical oils, beeswax, clays and charcoal are used in our cleansing balm and Mālama Mud Mask.
Is honey good for skin?
Honey is valued in skincare because it attracts and holds moisture and gives formulas a soft, cushiony texture. In a well balanced product, honey can help skin feel hydrated, smooth and comfortable.
Skincare results vary by person, and honey is not a treatment for a medical skin condition. Anyone with highly reactive skin, known bee product allergies or active irritation should patch test first and consult a qualified professional when needed.
What is a cleansing balm?
A cleansing balm is a rich oil based facial cleanser that begins with a solid or semi solid texture. As it is massaged onto dry skin, it melts into a silky cleansing oil.
The oils help loosen sunscreen, makeup, excess oil and daily buildup. The balm is then removed with warm water or a warm damp cloth, leaving the skin feeling cleansed without the tight sensation associated with some strong foaming cleansers.
What does a cleansing balm feel like?
The Māla Honey cleansing balm feels rich, smooth and buttery in the jar. Body warmth transforms it into a silky oil as you massage it across the face.
Because it contains honey, beeswax and botanical oils, it feels more substantial than a liquid cleanser. After removal, the goal is for skin to feel soft, comfortable and clean rather than dry or stripped.
What does the Māla Honey cleansing balm do?
The Raw Honey and Herbal Oil Cleansing Balm is designed to dissolve makeup, sunscreen, excess oil and everyday buildup while supporting a soft, hydrated after feel.
It combines raw honey, beeswax, propolis and botanical oils with an infusion of herbs. A gentle coconut derived cleansing ingredient helps the balm rinse more cleanly than a plain facial oil.
How do I use the Raw Honey and Herbal Oil Cleansing Balm?
- Begin with dry hands and a dry face.
- Massage a small amount over the skin using slow circular movements.
- Spend extra time on areas with sunscreen or makeup.
- Remove with warm water or a warm damp cloth.
- Follow with toner, serum or moisturizer if desired.
Avoid getting the product directly into the eyes. Stop use if persistent irritation occurs.
Can the cleansing balm remove makeup and sunscreen?
Yes. Oil based cleansing balms are particularly useful for loosening foundation, face makeup, mineral sunscreen and water resistant products.
Heavy eye makeup may require extra time or a separate eye safe remover. Avoid rubbing delicate eye skin aggressively and rinse carefully.
Will an oil cleansing balm leave my skin greasy?
A cleansing balm can leave a soft, conditioned feel, but it should not feel like a heavy layer of unused oil when removed thoroughly.
Use a modest amount and remove it with a warm damp cloth if you prefer a cleaner finish. People with very oily skin may choose to follow with a gentle water based cleanser as part of a double cleansing routine.
What skin types can use a cleansing balm?
Cleansing balms are especially popular with dry, mature and normal skin because they cleanse without a strongly stripped feeling. Many people with combination or oily skin also enjoy them as a first cleansing step.
Every skin type is different. Patch test first if you are sensitive, acne prone or unfamiliar with any of the botanical oils or bee derived ingredients.
What does the Mālama Mud Mask do?
The Mālama Mud Mask is designed to cleanse, gently exfoliate and leave the skin feeling smooth and refreshed. It combines raw Hawaiian honey with bentonite clay, bamboo charcoal, turmeric and nourishing botanical oils.
Bentonite clay and charcoal help lift surface oil and buildup, while honey and oils help keep the experience from feeling like a harsh, completely drying clay mask.
How do I use the Mālama Mud Mask?
- Apply the mask to a damp, freshly cleansed face.
- Massage gently if you want light physical exfoliation.
- Allow it to remain on the skin for approximately one to five minutes.
- Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
- Follow with moisturizer if desired.
Do not allow the mask to become painfully tight or uncomfortable. Avoid the immediate eye area and discontinue use if irritation develops.
Can I use the Mālama Mud Mask as a facial scrub?
Yes. Apply a small amount to damp skin and massage very gently before rinsing it away. The natural texture provides light physical exfoliation.
Do not scrub aggressively. Excess pressure can irritate the skin, especially when using another exfoliating product, retinoid or active treatment in the same routine.
How often should I use the Mālama Mud Mask?
Many people begin with once a week and adjust based on how their skin feels. Oilier skin may enjoy it more frequently, while dry or sensitive skin may prefer less frequent use and a shorter application time.
More is not always better. Give the skin time between exfoliating treatments and reduce frequency if you notice tightness, dryness or irritation.
What do bentonite clay and charcoal do in a face mask?
Bentonite clay absorbs oil and gives the mask its mineral rich mud texture. Bamboo charcoal contributes color and helps bind surface impurities and excess oil as the mask is rinsed away.
These ingredients can feel drying when used alone, which is why the Mālama formula also includes raw honey, kukui nut oil and avocado oil.
Should I patch test Māla Honey skincare?
Yes. Apply a small amount to a discreet area and wait before using the product across your entire face. Patch testing is especially important for sensitive skin and anyone with known allergies to honey, beeswax, propolis, nuts, flowers, essential oils or botanical ingredients.
Do not apply skincare to broken or severely irritated skin unless directed by a qualified healthcare professional.
Customer Care
Orders and Shipping.
Helpful information about ordering from Hawaiʻi, warm weather shipping, gifts, wholesale and product care.
Where does Māla Honey ship?
Māla Honey ships from Hawaiʻi Island to customers throughout Hawaiʻi and the continental United States. Available shipping methods and rates are calculated during checkout.
Delivery times can vary based on destination, carrier conditions, holidays and weather. Orders traveling from Hawaiʻi may require more transit time than a mainland shipment.
What happens if my honey becomes warm during shipping?
Honey can become thinner when warm and thicker when cool. Temporary warmth during shipping may change its immediate texture without harming the sealed product.
Place the upright jar at normal room temperature before opening. The honey will generally thicken again as it cools.
What should I do if my order arrives damaged?
Contact us as soon as possible with your order number and clear photographs of the shipping box, label and damaged item. Keep the packaging until the issue has been reviewed.
Photographs help us document carrier damage and determine the appropriate replacement or resolution.
Are Māla Honey products good gifts?
Yes. Honey infusions, honeycomb and skincare make distinctive Hawaiʻi gifts for birthdays, holidays, hosts, weddings and corporate gifting.
The honey infusion collection is especially useful when you want to present several flavor experiences together. Always confirm that the recipient does not have relevant food, mushroom, botanical or bee product allergies.
Does Māla Honey offer wholesale ordering?

Tours take place at Puʻu Wai Gardens near Waipiʻo Road in Honokaʻa, Hawaiʻi. The property is only a short drive from the Waipiʻo Valley Lookout.
Your booking confirmation will include current arrival and direction information. Follow the tour directions rather than relying only on a general map search.
What is the minimum age for the tour?
The minimum age is five years old. Children must remain with their responsible adult and be able to follow the beekeeper’s safety instructions.
A live apiary environment requires calm movement, listening and cooperation from every guest.
What should I wear for a honeybee tour?
Closed toe shoes are required. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for warm farm conditions and walking on grass or uneven ground.
Protective beekeeping suits and veils are provided for the hive portion. Avoid strong perfume and bring any personal sun or rain protection you may need.
Will I be close to live honeybees?
Yes. The experience is designed to bring guests safely near active honeybee colonies while wearing protective equipment and following the beekeeper’s instructions.
Honeybees are living animals and no apiary experience can guarantee that a sting will never occur. Guests should make an informed decision based on their personal allergy history and comfort level.
Can I attend if I have a bee sting allergy?
A severe bee sting allergy can be life threatening. Contact us before booking and speak with your medical provider about whether entering an active apiary is appropriate for you.
Guests with prescribed emergency medication are responsible for bringing it and knowing how to use it. Protective suits reduce exposure but cannot remove all risk.
Can pregnant guests join the honeybee tour?
Pregnant guests may participate in the educational, farm and tasting portions when they feel comfortable, but they should consult their medical provider before entering an active apiary.
For added caution, pregnant guests do not handle hive frames. Weather, heat, uneven ground, protective clothing and possible bee stings should all be considered before booking.
What happens if it rains?
Tours generally continue during light to moderate rain using covered areas and available rain protection. The farm and educational portions can often continue even if the hive portion needs to be modified.
Severe weather or unsafe hive conditions may require rescheduling, cancellation or an adjusted experience. Any tour specific decision will be communicated using the contact information on the reservation.
Is the live hive portion guaranteed?
The live hive portion depends on weather, colony behavior and safe operating conditions. Honeybees should not be disturbed when conditions make opening the hive unsafe or harmful to the colony.
Your beekeeper may shorten, modify or replace the hive opening while still providing a meaningful educational experience.
Is the farm fully accessible?
The experience includes outdoor farm terrain that may be grassy, sloped, damp or uneven. Guests should be able to walk approximately one quarter mile and stand for portions of the tour.
Contact Waipiʻo Honeybee Tours before booking to discuss a specific mobility need. We will provide the clearest available information about current site conditions but cannot guarantee that every area will be accessible to every mobility device.
How many people are on each tour?
Tours are designed for small groups, generally from two to twelve guests. Small group sizes create more time for questions, close guidance and a relaxed honey tasting.
Private tour options may be available depending on the schedule and group size.
How do I book a Waipiʻo Honeybee Tour?
Visit the dedicated Waipiʻo Honeybee Tours booking page to view live availability, tour times, current pricing and booking policies.
