Understanding your Queen

Roles of the Queen Bee:

The queen bee is the nucleus of the hive, with distinct roles that contribute to its overall function. Her primary responsibility lies in laying eggs, contributing to the hive's population growth. Basically she does everything for the hive besides foraging for nectar and pollen.

Longevity of Queen Bees:

Unlike worker bees that have a short lifespan of a few weeks, queen bees exhibit remarkable longevity. The extended lifespan is attributed to the royal jelly diet provided during the queen's development, which differs from the diet of worker larvae. Also strong genetics that are able to combat the many variables throughout her life. I met a queen breeder from New Mexico that specializes in longevity, raising queens up to 5 years old.

Genetics and Queen Bee Production:

Genetics play a crucial role in determining the qualities of a queen bee. Beekeepers often selectively breed queens with desirable traits, such as docility, productivity, and disease resistance. There are many different ways to accomplish strong genetics in a bee hive. The large companies will hire someone to come with proven strong genetics from around the world to insemenate their “breeder queens”. They will then go and raise thousands of virgin queens from the breeder to mate with the surrounding genetics already established in their apiary.

On a smaller scale such as myself, I have found that starting your genetic pool from feral hives have extreme benifits. They have proven their survival against pest and various diseases without the help of a beekeeper or any outside treatments. Sometimes a beehive is so strong they will split off and end up in someone’s house. This requires them needed to be removed for the homeowner, and contained into a beehive and established back in my apiary. This is a great way to get a feral hive without taking bees from where they do not need to be moved.

Health of Queen Bees:

The health of the queen bee is pivotal for hive prosperity. Ailing queens can result in a decline in egg-laying, disruption of hive dynamics, spread fungal or disease, and even lead to the replacement of the queen by the worker bees.
